Why use burnt wood ?

Burning to Better Protect: Transforming to Strengthen. The Yakisugi technique, also known as Shou Sugi Ban, illustrates the art of transforming wood to make it more resistant and durable. This ancient Japanese process creates charred wood, which is 12 times more insulating than concrete, more economical, renewable, healthy, and has a low environmental impact.

Shou Sugi Ban enhances the wood’s natural properties, such as resistance to rain, wind, insects, UV rays, and humidity. Charred wood ensures exceptional longevity, providing protection that can last up to a century outdoors.

Additionally, charred wood offers thermal insulation and stable humidity control, eliminating the need for synthetic chemical treatments. Choose Shou Sugi Ban charred wood for your projects: an aesthetic, ecological, and high-performance solution inspired by Japanese craftsmanship.

WABI SABI

The Art of the imperfect perfection

In traditional Japanese aesthetics, Wabi-Sabi is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. Wabi-Sabi is an aesthetics and spiritual concept that represents simplicity, nature and celebrates beauty in its most modest form. It focused on the idea of beauty and attention to the passing of time. This principle connects to the World of Art, literature and self-development. Wabi-Sabi, the Art of imperfection is revolutionizing the way we see the world. It represents the natural wear and tear through time as well as the idea of overall appeal for things that have gone through the time. The burnt wood craft (that the workshop is focusing on) is entangled to the Wabi-Sabi aesthetics : it comes from a mix of several natural processes (photosynthesis and fire) and there is absolutely no geometric no controlled part in this process. It develops a patina over time and this change of look is welcome and very much appreciated by customers who understand this concept.

Belonging to Wabi-Sabi means that you agree and understand the imperfection of the wood surface. The charcoal presents on the wood at its early stage will progressively disappear and there is no way to control how the wood will react or what the aesthetic will look like within a month or over the following century.
